How to Extend the Life of Your Food & Beverage Pump Seals
In a perfect world, a mechanical seal would wear down gradually and predictably. In the real world of food and beverage processing, seals often fail prematurely due to environmental and operational stresses. Improving your MTBR (Mean Time Between Repair) starts with identifying the root cause of these early failures.

1. Dry Running: The Silent Killer
Mechanical seals rely on a thin film of fluid (either the product itself or a flush) to lubricate the seal faces. When a pump is started without fluid—or if a “slug” of air enters the line—the friction between the faces generates intense heat in seconds.
- The Result: Cracked or “heat-checked” seal faces.
- The Fix: Implement low-level sensors or flow switches to ensure the pump never runs dry.
2. Chemical Incompatibility (The Elastomer Error)
A common mistake in sanitary applications is choosing a seal based on the food product but ignoring the CIP (Clean-in-Place) cycle. An EPDM seal might be perfect for your juice product but will swell and degrade if exposed to certain oil-based additives or specific sanitizers.
- The Result: Swollen, brittle, or “sticky” O-rings that prevent the seal from moving freely.
- The Fix: Audit your cleaning chemicals and ensure your elastomers (EPDM, Viton, Kalrez) are rated for both your product and your highest washdown temperatures.
3. Abrasive Particles and Crystallization
Products like sugar syrups, chocolate, or fruit slurries can be brutal on seals. If the product crystallizes on the atmospheric side of the seal, those hard crystals act like sandpaper against the precision-lapped faces.
- The Result: Scored seal faces and rapid leaking.
- The Fix: Use a quench or flush system (like a double mechanical seal) to keep the faces clean and prevent product buildup.
4. Improper Installation and Handling
Mechanical seal faces are lapped to such a high degree of flatness that even the oils from a human fingerprint or a microscopic speck of dust can cause a leak path.
- The Result: Immediate leaking upon startup.
- The Fix: Use “Cartridge Seals” where possible to eliminate manual measurement errors, and always handle seal faces with clean, lint-free gloves.
5. Excessive Pressure or “Water Hammer”
Sudden pressure spikes—often caused by rapidly closing a manual valve or a sudden change in pump speed—can “pop” the seal faces open or distort the spring assembly.
- The Result: Distorted metal components or shattered hard faces (like Silicon Carbide).
- The Fix: Utilize VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives) for soft starts and installs “slow-closing” automated valves to mitigate hydraulic shock.
How to Extend Your MTBR: A Checklist for Success
To move from reactive repairs to a proactive strategy, keep these three tips in mind:
- Monitor Vibration: Use a tool like the Alfa Laval CM to detect shaft misalignment. If the shaft is wobbling, the seal cannot do its job.
- Check Your Flush: Ensure your seal flush lines are clear and at the correct pressure (typically 15-20 PSI above the stuffing box pressure).
- Standardize Your Spares: Keep a localized inventory of the correct seal kits at your facility to ensure that during a repair, the “wrong” elastomer isn’t used just because it was the only one on the shelf.
